4th of July weekend is a big holiday weekend, celebrated all around the country mainly by fun, games, family-bbq and fire-works.

Everywhere people are invited and hanging out having a great time eating and drinking.

These upcoming weeks I will share with you a different take on everyday foods and what research is finding out about these everyday foods.

Be Aware of what you eat! Food that may get you sick.

Over the last couple of years researchers have started looking into our food consumption and the effects on our bodies. Suddenly there are all new kinds of cancers discovered and there is still no medical cure available. One thing is for sure: “Something in our food is causing disease.”

What is this “something”? It is a substance called Carcinogen.  A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. The atom containing overactive energy that causes replica or new atoms to form which can attack the old cells. Several radioactive substances are considered carcinogens. Common examples of non-radioactive carcinogens are inhaled asbestos, certain dioxins and tobacco smoke. Generally carcinogenicity is associated with synthetic chemicals, but they are equally present in natural and synthetic substances. Carcinogens are not necessarily immediately toxic but their effect can be corruptive on our health.  We may not be thinking about whether the food we are eating contain carcinogens or not. Please continue reading to get more information on things we eat without worries, but maybe harmful.

Let’s start with microwave popcorn – This convenience snack is so easy to make and eat. Just pop one of the small bags in the microwave, set the timer and waahlaaa…. Ready to eat!! Hmm…maybe not? Let’s go back. Start with the bag the popcorn rests in. It’s lined with a chemical called perfluoro- octanoic acid ( PFOA). This is a toxin you can find in Teflon also. After being heated, this toxic chemical is known to cause infertility and cancer in lab animals. The EPA lists this chemical as a known carcinogen. Now, let’s talk about the contents. Although every manufacturer uses slightly different ingredients, most of them use soybean oil (a GMO product) as well as various preservatives such as propyl-gallate, a chemical that causes stomach problems and skin rashes. Now they don’t actually say they are using GMO corn kernels, but that’s because the government says they don’t have to. Even if they don’t use GMO corn, you can bet they aren’t using organic corn either.

Canned tomatoes Most canned foods are a concern because of what the can is lined with. The lining of almost all canned foods are made with a chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA.

BPA actually affects the way genes work inside the brain of rats. Even the FDA agrees that there is a problem with BPA as it is supporting efforts to either replace or at the very least, to minimize the amounts found in canned foods. You know it must be bad when even the FDA is concerned! Why  canned tomatoes? Tomatoes are exceptionally dangerous due to their high acidity, which seems to cause BPA to leech from the lining of the can into the tomatoes themselves. The level of BPA can be so high that we should seriously consider not feeding them to children. Be safe and avoid cans. Cook fresh or buy glass bottles.

Artificial sweeteners – Most people think it is better to use the artificial sweeteners instead of real sugar especially when they want to lose weight or are diabetic. Long term studies actually shows that using these sweeteners may cause weight gain and does not contribute toward reduction of diabetes. In fact these sweeteners make it more difficult to control blood sugar levels and worsen conditions that are related to diabetes such as cataracts and gastroparesis. Aspartame is used in the making of these sweeteners. These can break down in the body into a deadly toxin called DKP. Processed in the stomach, this chemical can cause brain tumors.

Hydrogenated oils – All hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils. They cannot be extracted naturally like butter. They have to be chemically removed from their source and then changed to be more acceptable to consumers. Most of the times they are deodorized and colored to look appealing. Vegetable oils contain high levels of omega-6. An excess of omega-6 fatty acids can cause health problems such as heart disease, increase in cancers especially skin cancer. Omega-3 and omega-6 have to be in good balance to help our body functioning well. Get plenty omega-3 in everyday. Good sources are wild salmon, mackerel, grass-fed meats. Hydrogenated oils are used to preserve processed foods and help keep them looking appealing. Hydrogenated oils influence our cell membrane’s structure and flexibility, which is linked to cancer.
